Teether

Benefits from Teether

Babies like to put things in their mouths. This is a natural reflex and an important part of their development. Chewing on different materials and shapes stimulates the periodontal membrane under the teeth, and in so doing, babies learn to control the force of their bite.

PIGEON teethers are designed to stimulate babies' senses and promote natural jaw development.

The lips are tactile sensors

As soon as the lips touch something, they judge whether it is edible. At about three months old, babies need to be given some training in using their lips to make tactile judgment about materials and objects.

The periodontal membrane is a touch sensor

When a baby holds something with her teeth, the periodontal membrane gauges the force being applied with the upper teeth. It also acts as a sensor to ascertain the properties of each item it comes into contact with. The periodontal membrane has to be sensitive enough to judge the consistency and elasticity of food. Otherwise, the child has to chew different foods with the proper bite force for each. It is thus vital for parents to encourage the development of the periodontal membrane from the time the baby's primary teeth first emerge.

Periodontal Membrane

The periodontal membrane connects the dental roots and the alveolar ridge, holding the teeth in place. It absorbs shocks to the bones by moving upwards and downwards whenever a person chews.
